QUICK ANSWER

McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. is developing an electric boiler for industrial steam and hot water. It is in development and not yet available. For plants planning ahead of zero-emission rules in California air districts, McKenna can talk through electric options today, and for boilers of 2,000,000 Btu/hr or less it has gas-fired units pre-certified to South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2. Call (323) 987-1816 or email info@mckennaboiler.com.

Why electric

Zero-emission rules and dates.

The rule dates

Under South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2, gas-fired units up to 2,000,000 Btu/hr that make steam or heat water above 180°F move to a zero-emission standard: January 1, 2029, in new buildings and January 1, 2033, in existing buildings once a unit is 25 years old (lower-temperature units have earlier dates).

No combustion on site

An electric boiler has no burner and no flue gas, so there are no NOx emissions from the boiler itself.

Plan the replacement now

A boiler runs for decades. A replacement planned today should account for the rules it will run under.

Lower-temperature units and other air districts have different dates. We’ll confirm what applies to your boiler.

South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2, amended in June 2024, moves gas-fired units up to 2,000,000 Btu/hr that make steam or heat water above 180°F to a zero-emission standard: January 1, 2029, in new buildings and January 1, 2033, in existing buildings once a unit is 25 years old (lower-temperature units have earlier dates). An electric boiler has no on-site combustion, so it produces no NOx at the boiler. McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. will check which dates apply to your boiler.

For boilers of 2,000,000 Btu/hr or less, McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. has gas-fired units pre-certified to South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2. For larger boilers, McKenna builds low NOx and ultra-low NOx boilers and does high-efficiency, ultra-low NOx burner retrofits, as low as 2.5 ppm NOx (corrected to 3% O2) on select models.

It depends on the boiler’s size, type, location, and whether it is in a new or existing building. Lower-temperature units and other air districts have different dates. McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. will check the rule that applies to your boiler.
