Oil, Gas & Refining

Auxiliary steam, tank heating, and tracing.

Terminals, production sites, and refineries use packaged firetube boilers for auxiliary and standby steam, heating storage tanks, steam tracing to keep product lines flowing, and building heat. These boilers often run for months between shutdowns, so tube condition, controls, and safety devices need regular attention.

We build packaged firetube boilers for these jobs, and we service and repair the boilers already on site, including R stamp code repairs and retubes.

What matters

What an oil, gas, and refining boiler room needs.

Reliability

Boilers that keep tracing and tank heating on in every season.

Code repairs

R stamp repairs made to the National Board Inspection Code, plus retubes.

Emissions

Burners and controls set up to meet the air district’s NOx limits.

Contractor safety

McKenna is an ISNetworld member. Every factory and field employee has completed OSHA 10-Hour training, management has completed OSHA 30-Hour training, and crews follow a written safety handbook.

Codes and rules

Code repairs and refinery air rules.

Alterations, and repairs that involve welding on pressure-retaining parts, such as seal-welded tubes and tubesheet repairs, are made under the National Board R certificate and the National Board Inspection Code, and inspected by an Authorized Inspector. In most cases, replacing rolled and beaded tubes is not an R stamp repair; check with your Authorized Inspector. New boilers are built and stamped under the ASME code in our shop.

Boilers also have to meet the local air district’s NOx limits, which are among the tightest in the country in the South Coast and San Joaquin Valley. In the South Coast, refinery boilers fall under Rule 1109.1; in the Bay Area, they fall under Regulation 9, Rule 10. McKenna supports permits and source testing and retrofits ultra-low NOx burners, as low as 2.5 ppm NOx (corrected to 3% O2) on select models.
