QUICK ANSWER
McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. prepares boilers for jurisdictional inspection and performs safety testing across California. McKenna opens and cleans the boiler for the inspector, tests safety controls to ASME CSD-1 where it applies, performs hydrostatic tests when required, and makes the repairs the inspector calls out, with code repairs under its National Board R certificate. The plant schedules its state or insurance inspector and files for the permit; McKenna prepares the boiler for that date. McKenna works on McKenna boilers and other brands. Family-owned since 1921. What we do
What inspection prep covers.
- Open, clean, and prepare the boiler for internal inspection
- Low water cutoff and safety control testing, to ASME CSD-1 where it applies
- Safety valve checks, and replacement when a valve needs it
- Hydrostatic testing when the inspector requires it
- On site with the inspector during the inspection
- Repairs called out on the report, with code repairs under our National Board R certificate

Why it matters
Inspection and the permit to operate.
In California, power boilers need a Cal/OSHA permit to operate. Title 8 Section 770 calls for an internal and external inspection every year, and the permit is renewed after each one. On application, Cal/OSHA can allow up to 36 months between internal inspections of some fired boilers, or up to 72 months for unfired boilers such as process steam generators. Low-pressure boilers (steam at 15 psi or less, or water at 160 psi or less and 250°F or less), miniature boilers, and the other boilers listed in Title 8 Section 771 don’t need the permit, but still have to meet the Boiler Safety Orders. A boiler that isn’t ready costs you a second visit and more downtime.
You schedule your state or insurance inspector and file for the permit to operate. McKenna prepares the boiler around that date: open, clean, and tested before the inspector arrives. Then we fix what’s on the report.
How it runs
How inspection prep runs.
01
Your inspection date
You schedule your state or insurance inspector. We set the prep around that date and your shutdown. Have your water treatment company there too, so they can check and monitor the water side while the boiler is open.
02
Open and test
The boiler is opened, cleaned, and its safety controls tested.
03
Inspection
McKenna is on site for the inspection when you want us there, to open the boiler and answer the inspector’s questions about the work.
04
Repairs
Anything on the report is quoted and repaired, with R forms filed for code work.
