QUICK ANSWER
McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. upgrades boiler controls and efficiency across California. Upgrades include Autoflame combustion controls with oxygen trim, lead-lag sequencing with Autoflame Mk8 MM controls, Autoflame DTI monitoring, flame safeguard replacements, safety control upgrades to ASME CSD-1 or NFPA 85 where they apply, and custom-sized stack economizers. McKenna is a factory-authorized Autoflame Tech Center and also installs, sets up, and tunes controls from other manufacturers, including a brand your engineer or contractor already specified, on McKenna boilers and other brands. Family-owned since 1921. Call (323) 987-1816 or email info@mckennaboiler.com.
Upgrades
What we upgrade.
Combustion controls
Autoflame or controls from other manufacturers, with fuel and air on their own servos so the fuel-air ratio holds across the firing range.
Oxygen trim
Measures O2 in the stack and trims air in real time to keep excess air low.
Lead-lag sequencing
Autoflame lead-lag sequencing that runs multiple boilers to follow the load, with DTI for monitoring.
Flame safeguards
Replacement of obsolete flame safeguards with Fireye, Autoflame, Siemens, Honeywell, or controls from other manufacturers.
Safety control upgrades
Low water cutoffs, gas trains, and safety devices brought up to ASME CSD-1 or NFPA 85 where they apply.
Stack economizers
Custom-sized stack economizers that recover flue gas heat to preheat feedwater or process water.
Autoflame equipment
The Autoflame controls we install.
McKenna Boiler Works, Inc. is a factory-authorized Autoflame Tech Center. These are the Autoflame products we install, set up, and service most, on McKenna boilers and other brands. When controls from another manufacturer fit the job better, we install those too.

Mk8 MM controller
Micro-modulation burner management on a 12.1-inch touchscreen. Fuel and air run on their own servomotors, so the fuel-air ratio holds across the firing range, with the flame safeguard built in.

Mini Mk9 controller
Autoflame’s current compact controller for steam and hot water boilers, with an 8-inch touchscreen, built-in flame safeguard and valve proving, VSD control, sequencing, and Modbus or BACnet to the BMS.

Mk8 EGA exhaust gas analyzer
Samples up to six stack gases (O2, CO2, CO, NO, NO2, and SO2) and feeds the readings to the MM controller for trim. Its emissions logs help with air permit reporting.

Mk8 DTI
Ties up to 10 Autoflame controllers and analyzers to one touchscreen, stores two years of data, and sends plant data and alarms to the BMS over Modbus or Ethernet.

Why upgrade
Why upgrade controls.
Mechanical linkage controls drift, can’t hold a tight fuel-air ratio at low fire, and give operators little to go on when something’s wrong.
Modern combustion controls hold the ratio, trim excess air, sequence boilers to the load, and show operators what the boiler is doing.

How a job runs
How an upgrade runs.
01
Survey
We look at the boilers, the controls, the load, and how the plant runs them.
02
Plan and spec
An upgrade planned around how your plant runs. You get the expected fuel savings, payback, and emissions in writing before you commit. The goal is steadier steam pressure, tighter combustion across the firing range, and less hands-on adjustment for your operators.
03
Install and commission
McKenna crews install, set up, and commission the new controls.
04
Train
Operators trained on the new controls before we hand them over.
