Cold water was then sprayed into the cylinder, condensing the steam and creating a vacuum. Atmospheric pressure outside the cylinder then pushed the piston downward. This motion was transferred via a large wooden beam to operate a pump that removed water from the mine.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Crucially, the engine relied on atmospheric pressure rather than high-pressure steam to do the work. This made it far safer than Savery’s design and allowed it to operate continuously over long periods. While the Newcomen engine was not particularly efficient—it consumed large amounts of coal—it was reliable, robust, and well-suited to its intended purpose.</p>
